Shut down Fessenheim!

Fessenheim is a specially symbolic place for all those who demand the end of atomic power production. During October 2009, the production of this, the oldest French atomic power station, will be stopped for its third ten-year visit. The inspection is to decide whether to shut down the plant and its two reactors, or to continue production for 10 more years. EDF wants to continue to use Fessenheim despite the fact that it is dangerous and un-economic, and despite the risk it represents for the surrounding population.

Let’s get out of atomic power production

The atomic energy pressure groups are against the shutting down of Fessenheim because this would be a first step in the shutting down of other ageing plants. They wish to continue their activity and at the same time construct new WPR plants. We maintain that just as France made clear the choice of adopting atomic energy with the construction of Fessenheim, so the abandon of this choice will begin with this first closure.

And turn towards the future

The construction of a sustainable future depends on reduced energy demand, decentralised production and clearly defined renewable energy policies. These are the only long term solutions which will cover our needs and avoid climate problems.

Our weekend of action takes place just a few weeks before the International Conference on Climate in Copenhagen. Let’s use it to proclaim with force that nuclear power is not clean energy.
